The L. E. Smoot Memorial Library was built in 1969 with a dedication in February 1970. It was a gift to the community from Anne H. Smoot in memory of her husband Lewis Edgerton Smoot and she donated it to the county in November 1973. The library almost tripled in size with the 2013 renovation and expansion. It offers access to books, computers, Wi-Fi, and community meeting rooms. It is truly a great asset in the county.
And there to support the library in special events and programs is The Friends of the Smoot Library (FOSL). The Friends have been around since the 1990s. They run a bookstore inside the library that specializes in used books at an incredible discount. They have boxes outside and inside the library for donations of books, CDs and DVDs in good condition.
They replace Library books that become “lost”. The bookstore carries books for all ages, many different genres, and the holiday book cart is already in place. They also have a free rack, pick a book or two and leave a donation in the Teddy Bear on the library desk. The volunteers I met with are passionate about reading and supporting the library. The bookstore is run by volunteers They are looking for new members that love to read, volunteers read for free. They are looking for passionate people to serve on their board of directors. The current fund raiser is their $5/bag book sale, see below. If you love to read this is a great way to give back to the community and if this sounds like you, contact Kris Edgar.
