July is National Recreation and Parks Month. We are fortunate to have a terrific Parks & Rec Program here in King George. Chris Clarke is our Director of Parks and Recreation he has been with the County for three years, he was previously the Recreation Supervisor for Ocean City Maryland. His office is located in the King George Citizens Center at 8076 Kings Highway. The National Recreation and Parks Association published statistics that show 70% of US adults say investing in local infrastructure is extremely or very important and identified Community Centers, Rec Centers, Parks, and Senior Centers as part of that infrastructure. Our Parks and Recreation Department contributes to all these areas and makes a significant contribution to our overall quality of life.
King George Parks & Recreation has been around since about 1978. It started out as a Citizens Center for our seniors. Providing socialization and meals. The program was managed by the County with the help of volunteers. Parks and Recreation was moved to the building and the programs started to expand.
Today Parks & Recreation provides services to a wide range of interests and age groups. We still have a senior’s program for socialization and meals. During last year’s shut down they provided learning space for students whose parents were essential workers. They provide before and after school programs, sports, enrichment programs for all ages and trips. They organize some of the county celebrations like the upcoming fireworks for our Independence Celebration, kids dances, and an Easter Egg Hunt. They manage the sports fields in the county and Cedell Brooks Jr. Park and Wayside Park (currently closed due to the bridge construction), and Wilmont Boat Landing.
